Slab Leak
Water escaping under a slab has nowhere to surface, so it saturates the fill and works sideways under the house until somebody finds and stops it.
When this becomes an emergency
- One area of tile or laminate that's noticeably warm underfoot.
- The sound of running water with every fixture in the house closed.
- A water bill that climbed with no change in how the house is used.
- Baseboard or flooring lifting along one wall of a ground-floor room.
What a pro does
Confirmation comes before location. The plumber closes the house off at the main, watches the meter, and sees whether anything is still moving, which separates a genuine leak under the concrete from a running toilet upstairs. Only then does the search start. Locating uses acoustic listening gear and pressure isolation on one section of the system at a time, since cutting concrete on a hunch is expensive and rarely lands on the pipe. Slab construction is common through the subdivisions that filled in around Meridian, Kuna and Star from the 1990s onward, and those homes generally have soft copper looping through the slab. This valley's water carries a lot of mineral, and over years a scale layer combined with a spot of aggressive corrosion is enough to open a pinhole in a line that nobody ever touched. Newer builds using PEX from a central manifold behave differently and fail less often in the slab itself. The repair is either a small opening cut over the located spot or a reroute that abandons the buried run and brings a new line through the attic or a wall, which often makes more sense when the pipe's age suggests a second pinhole is coming.
