What a pro does

A plumber's first question isn't what to snake, it's how many fixtures are involved. One slow sink is a branch problem. Two fixtures on opposite sides of the house acting up together points at the main run and gets treated completely differently. Kitchen lines take the worst of it in valley homes, where hard water off the Boise River system leaves scale on the inside of a drain and grease grabs onto that rough surface instead of sliding past. Cabling clears the opening, though on a line that's been narrowing for years a camera afterward is what tells you whether the pipe still has a working diameter or whether it's lined with buildup end to end. Older houses in Boise's first neighborhoods still run cast iron under the floor, and that scales differently than the ABS in a newer Meridian or Kuna build. The plumber reads the pipe, not just the clog.

Scale builds on any wetted surface. In a drain it doesn't block flow by itself, but it leaves a gritty inner wall that soap and grease cling to, so a line that used to shed everything starts collecting instead. That's why kitchen drains in older valley homes slow down gradually rather than all at once.
Not usually. A single fixture backing up while everything else runs normally is almost always a branch issue close to that fixture. It's when several fixtures on different sides of the house misbehave together that the trouble has moved to the main.
It's worth knowing that plumbers generally find those products make the visit harder rather than easier, since standing caustic liquid in a partly blocked line has to be dealt with before anyone can work. Whatever caused the blockage is also still there afterward in most cases.
They do, just for different reasons. A five-year-old house in Star or Middleton has smooth plastic drain lines with no scale, so the blockages tend to be things that went down and shouldn't have, or a long flat run with not quite enough fall on it.
